GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL IS CHANGING...

With recent announcements from the FA is has been revealed that all u7 will play 3v3 instead of 5v5 from the 26/27 season. Change can be scary but we are here to educate and inform on what this will mean for you and your team.

3v3 Benefits

List and describe the key features of your solution or service.

For Players

The U7 3v3 format gives children more touches on the ball, more chances to shoot, pass, dribble and defend, and more decision-making moments, leading to faster skill development, greater confidence, and higher enjoyment — all of which support long-term participation in football.

For Clubs/teams/leagues

3v3 allows more children to play at the same time in the same space, reduces waiting time on sidelines, improves pitch efficiency, simplifies organisation, and helps retain players by creating a more fun, engaging match day experience.

For Coaches

Smaller teams mean more opportunities to observe and support each player, more meaningful coaching moments, clearer evidence of progress, easier session planning that matches game formats, and stronger alignment with England Football’s player-centred development approach. Understanding each individual player in a smaller format will help you more than you know by the time it comes to playing bigger formats.

" Why fix something that wasn't broken?! "

5v5 for u7 was never " broken " but there is a way better tool out there for the development for our young players and the beginning of their journey in grassroots football.

Here is some FAQ's and common concerns we often get:

The FA plans to provide support, guidance, and simplified formats to reduce burden. As a market leader, we can also help and guide you whether its from a coach, parent or club perspective we have the knowledge and expertise for any advice you may need.

The FA emphasises “Spirit of the Game” remains the same — scoring goals, teamwork, and enjoyment stay central.

No — evidence from LJMU, the FA and the Future of Youth Football Project, shows small-sided formats improve technical skill, decision-making, and confidence, helping long-term development.

3v3 increases touches, involvement, enjoyment, and learning opportunities, giving children a better introduction to the game. Remember, these are 7 years old, football needs to be fun and engaging due to being so young - It does not need to be as serious as a World Cup final.

On a single 5v5 pitch, there can be 4 3v3 games playing at one time. This makes it easy to rotate teams and increase participation. England Football states that 3v3 is designed to reduce pressure on grassroots resources, not increase it. Smaller teams mean fewer players to manage, simpler substitutions, and less matchday admin for volunteers and coaches. Festival-style formats reduce the need for qualified referees, while smaller pitches allow more games in the same space, improving pitch availability. The FA also commits to providing ready-made guidance, templates, and training, so clubs and leagues don’t have to create new systems themselves. Overall, the aim is to make youth football simpler, lighter to run, and more sustainable with existing resources
